Terms of Service

Last updated: October 7, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Lector (the "App"), a macOS menu bar app that copies and translates text from your screen, published by Magicelk Labs ("we", "us"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

1. License to use

Lector is source-available under the PolyForm Shield License 1.0.0, which governs your rights to the code. These Terms govern your use of the distributed App and its paid plans. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the App.

2. Eligibility

Lector is intended for users aged 13 or older. By using it you represent that you meet this requirement and that your use complies with all laws that apply to you.

3. Plans and purchases

A Text license can be upgraded to Translate for $6 with the upgrade. A grab counts once text is found, and a translation counts when it starts. Counts start over on the first of each month. When you reach a limit, the shortcut opens the License window instead of the crosshair, and a capture already under way always finishes.

Text and Translate are sold through Gumroad. Gumroad is the merchant of record: it processes your payment, and its terms and refund policy apply to your purchase. We do not see or store your payment details. Refunds, where offered, are handled through Gumroad.

4. License keys

Your purchase comes with a license key. Paste it from your receipt into Settings › License. For an upgrade, enter your Text key first, then the upgrade key. Lector checks the key with Gumroad when you enter it and again at each launch. A key Gumroad has confirmed keeps working for 30 days without a connection. If Lector can't reach Gumroad for longer than that, it removes the key, and you enter it again once you're back online.

A key for a purchase that was refunded, disputed or charged back stops working. To move your license to another Mac, remove it in Settings › License and enter it on the other Mac.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

You are responsible for what you capture and translate, and for how you use the result.

6. Third-party components and services

The App relies on components and services it does not control, including Apple's Vision and Translation, Tesseract, Leptonica, ONNX Runtime, the Opus-MT models downloaded from Hugging Face, Gumroad for license checks, and GitHub for updates. Their own licenses and terms apply to them, as set out on the License page. Lector is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Apple or any of these projects and services.

7. Disclaimer of warranty

The App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be error-free, that it will read every text correctly, or that its translations will be accurate. Handwriting, vertical Japanese and heavily stylised fonts may read badly or not at all, and machine translation makes mistakes. Check anything important with someone who reads the language.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Magicelk Labs will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for lost data or profits, arising out of your use of or inability to use the App. Our total liability for any claim relating to the App will not exceed the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim.

9. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time. We may suspend or end your right to use the App if you breach these Terms. The sections that by their nature should survive termination (including Disclaimer, Limitation of Liability, and Governing Law) will continue to apply.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new date above. Your continued use of the App after a change means you accept the revised Terms.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Israel, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The courts located in Israel will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from these Terms, unless mandatory law in your place of residence provides otherwise.
